Show HN: I made React with a faster Virtual DOM https://ift.tt/WvRrmSF

Show HN: I made React with a faster Virtual DOM Hi! I made a React compatibility library for a Virtual DOM library (https://ift.tt/pkqo6h8). The idea is to have much faster rendering (a compiler optimizes virtual DOM beforehand) while ensuring the same developer experience React provides. This is very, VERY early stage, so be prepared for weird bugs / plugin incompatibility / etc. If you have any suggestions, I'd be more than happy if you replied in a comment with it! You can spin up the demo here >> https://ift.tt/1LHdJz3 June 1, 2022 at 02:34AM

Show HN: Resumecreator.io – I built a simple resume builder https://ift.tt/kVaB8mu

Show HN: Resumecreator.io – I built a simple resume builder Hi HN! I'm a developer who noticed that I haven't done much experimentation lately. I decided I wanted to change that this year. This month I built a simple resume builder with the main goal of practicing front-end development, and to scratch an itch I had when updating my resume. :) After it was functional enough, I casually shared with some friends to express my enjoyment of crafting something just for the sake of having some fun. To my surprise they ended up asking how they could send to others. So I went one step further, due to my pure excitement, and hosted it on Netlify to make publicly available. In case you're curious, I used the React component library Mantine[1] in this project. I loved it, so I definitely recommend to check it out for your next React project. Have thoughts to share? I would love to know! :) If you're postponing starting that project you have been thinking of, just do it. Right now. Just create a new dir, load up your framework of choice and start it, even a couple of lines are enough to get you started. We should never forget that to play around is awesome. -- [1] https://mantine.dev https://ift.tt/C7D8hJS May 30, 2022 at 11:50PM

Show HN: Alternative for Zapier/Make to cut the costs significantly Great opportunity if you're a user of Zapier/Make or if you provide services based on these platforms, to cut your costs significantly. Excited to announce the launch of DoTenX( https://dotenx.com/ ), an open-source alternative for Zapier/Make: https://ift.tt/qOym02b If you're using platforms like Zapier or Make to automate workflows for yourself or provide it as a service to your clients, I invite you to get early access to our platform (Just mention here, or even better, DM me on Twitter). At this stage, the service will be available to a closed set of customers and if we have the capacity to give you access, you won't be charged until we provide the equivalent of the automations you have on other platforms (No CC required). --- *Note*: Registration is accessible to public, but unverified accounts won't be kept on the platform. Also, I'll contact those who've already shown interest in early access, but no harm in mentioning it here too. NoCode FTW! https://dotenx.com/ May 30, 2022 at 03:56AM

Show HN: Bugfruit – a simple embedded key-value store Hey HN! I work on a database for my day-job and I realized I had never written one from scratch, so I wrote bugfruit! Once I was mostly satisfied with it, I looked up some benchmarks to compare my simple database to other brand name key-value stores. I was surprised to see that mine held up fairly well on the subset of benchmarks I replicated. So I used the Pavlo Database Naming System [0] to name it and open-sourced the code. I'd love to hear any feedback you might have on it! [0] https://ift.tt/SP39GCw... https://ift.tt/KWIMJbT May 29, 2022 at 11:14PM

Show HN: NetBird – A P2P Network with WebRTC, WireGuard, SSO, and Zero Trust https://ift.tt/CV1TQGj

Show HN: NetBird – A P2P Network with WebRTC, WireGuard, SSO, and Zero Trust Hey folks! We have just released NetBird. It is a big update so I decided to share it here and get your feedback :) NetBird creates an overlay peer-to-peer network connecting machines automatically regardless of their location (home, office, data center, container, cloud, or edge environments) unifying virtual private network management experience. It uses ICE protocol (WebRTC) to negotiate p2p connections and WireGuard (kernel module, when possible) to create a fast and encrypted tunnel between machines, falling back to relay (TURN) in case a p2p connection isn't possible. Pretty much just a client application installation is needed, the rest is done by the software! Sharing the project with you wasn't the only purpose of the post. I wanted to discuss the future and vision behind it. I'm pretty sure that in a few years, such seamless connectivity without the hassle of configuring firewalls, managing IPs, manual key rotations, centralized gateways, etc. will become a commodity and the majority won't be talking about traditional VPNs. But what we think is becoming more relevant is advanced network security. We've seen the rise of Zero Trust with its ZTNA solutions in the past years. There are big vendors like ZScaler or Palo Alto already offering advanced network security features that leverage ML or contextual access controls to allow/block access based on context, not just identity. Why can't this be open-source and built on top of universal connectivity that works anywhere? That is what we are setting as a mission for our project - to bring seamless connectivity and advanced network security together in a single open-source solution. What do you think about it? We welcome contributors and if your excited of what we are building, feel free to reach out to us! P.S. We've been previously know as Wiretrustee :) https://ift.tt/gJV0kpR May 29, 2022 at 08:48PM

Show HN: WebRTC Nuts and Bolts, A holistic way of understanding how WebRTC runs https://ift.tt/s8iVnuC

Show HN: WebRTC Nuts and Bolts, A holistic way of understanding how WebRTC runs Hi HN! I’m so excited to show my first open-source project and first post here. I initially started this project to learn Go language, it is an experimental project. The main goal is to track the adventure of a WebRTC stream from start to finish, by debugging the project or tracking the output at console. By trying out this project, you will deep dive into the steps which are taken while starting up a WebRTC session, and more. It consists of a web UI (TypeScript) and a server back-end (Golang) projects. They can run on Docker containers, in development mode or production mode, you can find details in the README file. After some progress on the development, I decided to pivot my experimental work to a walkthrough document. Because although there are lots of resources that exist already on the Internet, they cover small chunks of WebRTC concepts or protocols atomically. And they use the standard way of inductive method which teaches in pieces then assembles them. But my style of learning leans on the deductive method instead of others, so instead of learning atomic pieces and concepts first, going linearly from beginning to the end, and learning an atomic piece on the time when learning this piece is required. I know it’s in a very niche technical domain, but hope you will like my project. Please check it out and I’d love to read your thoughts! https://ift.tt/KBYDPnE https://ift.tt/KBYDPnE May 29, 2022 at 12:27PM

Show HN: I turned my face rec system into a video codec https://ift.tt/08uHQxt

Show HN: I turned my face rec system into a video codec Before the pandemic, my tiny startup was doing quite well selling Edge AI systems, based on our own lightweight AI inference engine, with object detection and face recognition for smart city and smart retail & food service applications. When the real world shut down, there was suddenly nothing to monitor on streets and in restaurants, so I set out to try and evolve our real time face recognition system into a video codec for high quality face-to-face online interactions, as I was not satisfied with the quality of Zoom and friends. I got it to work, and the first release for IOS was just approved on Apple's app store, link: https://ift.tt/jbEU0s5 The way it works is that you create a meeting URL, which you can share out-of-band, for instance via slack or text message. You can also share as a QR code which the app can scan to join a call. You then place your device on a surface in front of you so that the front camera can see you, and it will recognize you face and assign you to your own session, which is broadcast to the meeting channel. If more than one person is in view, both of you will be broadcast but with separate session ids, like if you were on separate cameras. Other meeting participants will show up on your screen and you can start talking. It is optimized for eye contact, meaning that the eyes will actually make it through to the other side as more than just dark pixel clouds, so thinks should feel a bit more personal than the standard Zoom/Teams/or Google Meet call. Because it uses face rec, you can ONLY show your face, and if you disappear from view your audio will stop after a while, to avoid situations like when you need to go the the restroom but forget to mute. This also solves dick-pics etc. The CODEC is not based on H26[45], but is pure AI that runs on the GPU. There is a neural network that compresses the video in real time, and another one decompressing on the receiving end. Finding a tight network architecture that would do this in real time with acceptable quality was a major part of the effort. There are several quality settings possible, but right now it is set fairly high and for 20FPS maxes out around 700kbit/s, though typically uses about half. I've demonstrated good results down to around 200kbit/s, so in theory it should work over satellite links or even Bluetooth. The protocol is UDP with no congestion control but with (Wirehair) FEC to protect against mild packet loss, future versions will detect packet loss and adapt to available bandwidth. The audio just uses OPUS and may click a little bit, I blame AudioEngine or the fact that the last time I wrote audio code was for the game I published for the Amiga in 1994. If you don't have a friend around or multiple devices to play with, there is an "echo test" server mode that allows you to be in a meeting with yourself. Traffic will be peer-to-peer if possible, but otherwise you will be relaying through my tiny Raspberry PI server, so YMMV. I plan to try to switch to something like fly.io soon to improve scalability. There is also a MacOS version coming very soon, and the underlying AI engine also runs on Windows & Linux. Android support is planned. Please take a look and let me know what you think. https://ift.tt/7RDSFxy May 26, 2022 at 10:45AM

Show HN: Cube – open-source headless BI Hi HN, I'm Igor, a proud part of the team here at cube.dev. I'm excited to share some news about Cube, an open-source headless BI platform that now has almost universal connectivity to both upstream and downstream tools in the data pipeline: https://ift.tt/1klv98Z If you're confused by "headless BI", there's a blog post to get you covered (https://ift.tt/h0EoG7O), but the most concise and developer-friendly way to put it would be that Cube can connect to any data source that speaks SQL (from Postgres to BigQuery to ClickHouse to Materialize) and expose your data, conveniently presented as high-level metrics rather than in terms of tables and columns, via a set of APIs, including REST, GraphQL, and SQL API. The last one is particularly interesting, because it gives you an opportunity to deliver metrics through Cube to notebooks like Jupiter or BI tools like Tableau or Superset (all covered by SQL API), just like you can deliver them to front-end applications (covered by REST/GraphQL). Do you see Cube fit for the applications you're building? Let's discuss here or in Cube's Slack community (https://slack.cube.dev) where we recently celebrated that Cube has got over 13,000 stars on GitHub (which is not that bad for a developer tool, I guess). Show HN: Objectiv – open-source product analytics infrastructure https://ift.tt/OonWbM0

Show HN: Objectiv – open-source product analytics infrastructure Hi! One of the creators here. Very proud to finally be able to show you what we've been working on for over a year now. Curious to hear your thoughts! Objectiv is open-source (APLv2) product analytics infrastructure. It's built around a generic but strict event taxonomy, open/common data- and infra tools (currently PG, snowplow, working on bigquery with more to come), and the analyses are done using our pandas-like, SQL speaking modeling library called Bach. As a result, we’re moving towards a vision wherein models can be shared openly, independent of product, platform[1] or data platform[2]. How? - Fully assist the dev doing the instrumentation using tools for ide support, run-time validation, ci integration. No auto capture, but very low-effort[1] instrumentation. - Scale using proven tech: a single collector writing to PG for small or snowplow to anything[2] for big. - Feed data into your own data warehouse after validation. - No tracking plan, but an open event taxonomy designed for modeling, that fits most user interfaces out of the box or can be extended otherwise. - Take some of our pre-built models off the shelf or use Bach directly to model on the raw data in a notebook. - Bach generates SQL for the target platform: productionize without lock-in, feed to a BI system, dbt, etc. Where? Github: https://ift.tt/B7pq284 Docker demo: https://ift.tt/AdLDqju Website/docs: https://objectiv.io/ Let me know what you think and what platform/SQL backend you’d like to see supported first. [1] Currently on plain js, react, angular, react native. Future: vue, native android/ios. [2] Once we’re done building Bach support for all SQL platforms. Now: PG, bigquery in development. Future: redshift, clickhouse, athena, etc. https://objectiv.io/ May 19, 2022 at 12:45PM

Show HN: Natural Language Processing Demystified (Part One) Hi HN: I published part one of my free NLP course. The course is intended to help anyone who knows Python and a bit of math go from the very basics all the way to today's mainstream models and frameworks. I strive to balance theory and practice and so every module consists of detailed explanations and slides along with a Colab notebook (in most modules) putting the theory into practice. In part one, we cover text preprocessing, how to turn text into numbers, and multiple ways to classify and search text using "classical" approaches. And along the way, we'll pick up useful bits on how to use tools such as spaCy and scikit-learn. No registration required: https://ift.tt/WFvqdI9 https://ift.tt/WFvqdI9 May 18, 2022 at 12:55PM

Show HN: Pxl.to – A serverless link shortener with no limits and no downtime I built a service based on Amazon CloudFront's global edge network of points of presence. This distributed architecture affords the user: - Protection against network and application layer attacks - Robust and reliable links that will never go down - Instant links with low latency no matter where your visitors are in the world - Unlimited tracked clicks (no cap on clicks/month) The service has support for teams and custom domains, and auto-generates an SSL cert for every custom domain added, for HTTPS-secure links. It's largely free and can be found at https://www.pxl.to I'd love any feedback... no matter how brutal :) May 17, 2022 at 03:04AM

Show HN: I built a minimal website for Los Angeles https://ift.tt/fzn7GEH

Show HN: I built a minimal website for Los Angeles I built https://veryla.io - a minimal website for Los Angeles. After growing tired of the chaotic, fast paced, attention-economy focused state of the web, I decided to build something simple and quiet. A site with no "real" database (just a json file I update by hand), no email signups, no ads, no pop ups, no data collection (besides google analytics), and no comment section filled with highly polarized politics. A site updated only 1-2 times per week. It's just unique information in a simple and accessible format. The goal is for people to not check veryLA every day. I don't want people hitting refresh for emotionally charged SEO packed news to react to. My goal is for people to check out veryLA 1-2 per week and then go into the real world and have fun with the information they found. Hope you enjoy if you live in Los Angeles or are planning to visit! May 16, 2022 at 05:57AM

Show HN: KittenDNS – easy to setup, rule engine, LetsEncrypt compatible My goal was to create a DNS server as simple as the LDAP server I've been contributing to (glauth) and here it is: https://ift.tt/i6S4IHQ A few things to know about it: - It is easy to configure using a Toml file - I am using it to bail my coredns/etcd instances when under attack - (yes, it also works as a service location server) - It comes with a simple, plain English, rule engine that doesn't do much at this point - It can be used with LetsEncrypt. I use it to retrieve certificates for my home servers. - RFC: all the nice ones :) Anyway, feedback is welcome. May 15, 2022 at 11:34PM

Show HN: Babeloop, a new music sight-reading webapp https://ift.tt/DGSYZ9E

Show HN: Babeloop, a new music sight-reading webapp Backstory: I have a kid learning to play the clarinet in a music conservatory, which involves compulsory sight reading classes. Teaching for sight reading is done on books. The idea for this app is to port the method online, so that it's easier to practice and follow one's progress. It should also be more fun, and, for those so inclined, competitive. The learning method is based on landmarks: for each clef one first learns the position of 2-3 landmarks, and then each note is in relation to a landmark. So for example, if you know where the middle G is on the treble clef, then you can learn fast that 2 positions up (next line) is B, and two positions down is E. (Anecdotally, in an earlier iteration of the app, landmark notes were displayed using specific colors; but users learned colors instead of the note position on the staff, and when they moved to a level without colors (or an actual score) they were completely lost.) The app doesn't try to teach keyboard playing, or fingering for any other instrument for that matter. It only helps associate the position of a note on the staff with a name, in a given clef. It doesn't deal with octaves: a C3 is a C4 is a C; or accidentals: a sharp G is a flat G is a G. It also doesn't wait for user input, as other apps do. Music doesn't work that way; but more importantly, the point is to learn to recognize intervals instantly, not count them. No account is necessary to use the app, only to participate in the leaderboard, and save one's score in case of device reset (or to use more than one device). When an account is created, the data is stored on the server in SQLite; I'm curious to see how far it can go. (Without an account, no data leaves the device.) It's still a little rough around the edges but should work ok in reasonably recent browsers. On the client side, it uses VexFlow to display notes, staff and clefs, but animations are done using CSS transitions (not JS), to be mobile friendly. Tone.js helps provide a more accurate timing than a simple setInterval. Icons are coded in SVG by hand; for simple shapes, this is surprisingly fun and straightforward to do. https://ift.tt/jXSIi5Q May 15, 2022 at 06:55PM

Scooter Sidewalk Riding Detection Technology Demonstration

Scooter Sidewalk Riding Detection Technology Demonstration
By Sarah Hellman

Scooter permittees Lime, Spin and Scoot lined up during the MTA's Scooter Sidewalk Riding Detection Technology Demonstration

The SFMTA held a public demonstration of e-scooter sidewalk riding detection technology on Thursday, May 12, 2022 involving the three permittees: Lime, Scoot, and Spin. The demonstrations were required as part of the SFMTA’s Powered Scooter Share Program, which ensures that shared scooter operations support the City’s recovery from the pandemic in a safe, sustainable, and equitable way. This includes keeping our sidewalks safe, particularly for our most vulnerable pedestrians and road users.

Scooter sidewalk riding is illegal pursuant to the California Vehicle Code Section §21235(g) and poses significant risk to pedestrian and scooter rider safety, particularly for older adults or persons with disabilities using the sidewalk. Sidewalk riding detection technology enables the device to detect sidewalk riding in real time. Once detected, the scooter automatically slows the rider to a safer speed. We believe that sidewalk riding technology has a strong potential to curb usage scooter riding in San Francisco and may be the most effective way to reduce scooter share sidewalk riding in the City.

As part of the permitting process, the SFMTA required operators to first submit a plan for deploying sidewalk riding technology and then to begin implementation consistent with the plan. In recent months, each of the three permitted operators—Lime, Scoot, and Spin—have complied with our requirements and deployed scooters equipped with the new technology.

Thursday’s demonstration is the second demonstration to test this technology – the first was held in December 2021 – and we are pleased that the scooter companies are making progress with this important safety technology. Since the first demonstration, all permittees have started rolling out their sidewalk detection technology along The Embarcadero, which is a high-use area. Staff reported notable improvements during Thursday’s demonstration. The ride felt safer, there was an audible signal that the device had mounted the sidewalk and the sidewalk was detected more accurately. There are still areas for improvement, and as the scooter companies roll out this technology to their full fleets over the coming months, SFMTA staff will provide additional guidance. For example, staff identified deceleration method and speed as areas for additional guidance based on the results of Thursday’s demonstration. Because this technology is so new, these types of demonstrations help staff identify best safety practices and we will continue to work with the companies to continually improve.

The Powered Scooter Shared permit program allows for innovation while also ensuring private mobility options are positioned to best contribute to the public welfare of the city. Requiring sidewalk riding detection is just one of SFMTA’s initiatives to ensure that shared scooter usage follows safe riding measures and does not deteriorate the pedestrian environment and disability access.

In addition to deterring improper riding through specific safety requirements, on-street enforcement and holding the scooter share permittees accountable for implementing their sidewalk riding detection technology, the SFMTA is also committed to:

  • Actively maintaining an accessible path of travel along city sidewalks by requiring scooter permittees to have a locking mechanism and adhering to specific parking requirements to ensure that the scooters are not strewn about the sidewalk. If scooters are not parked properly, scooter companies may be cited. SFMTA has a public dashboard that shows citations and complaints.

  • Requiring scooter permittees to provide adaptive scooter devices as part of their on-street fleet and complementary rental programs. All permittees must provide devices with adaptive features such as three wheels, a basket or seat, to expand the range of users who can participate.

Scooters are a sustainable mode of travel and a complement to Muni and public transit service, and SFMTA looks forward to working with the Powered Scooter Shared Permittees to continue improving this important technology. For more information, please visit Powered Scooter Share Permit Program

Show HN: YouCode, a Search Engine for Coding Hi Hacker News, We're Bryan and Richard, cofounders of you.com. Together with our team of engineers, we are working on YouCode, a search engine for people who code. You can try it at code.you.com. The main idea is to make the search experience better and more efficient when coding. We’d love your feedback for a few use cases that we have in mind so far: * searching through StackOverflow for quick code snippets: reverting a git commit for example [1] * searching through GitHub Issues: when you’re getting an error message that looks unfamiliar [2, 3] * searching through the documentation for quick reference: PyTorch [4], HuggingFace [5], Docker, PyPi, AWS, MDN, and several others * searching for walkthroughs, tutorials, tips, and quick intros to a new subject: Medium [6], Tutorials Point, Geeks for Geeks, and others as well * searching for utilities: code completion (from a large language model that writes code) [7], JSON validator/formatter [8] * searching for relevant discussions and projects: HackerNews [9], ArXiv [10], Github Repos [11] * changing preferences in the account dropdown menu so that you can influence which sources you get answers from * doing all of this from VS Code: we made an extension to make that easier [12] YouCode is still a work in progress — we’re adding new apps each week and improving the search results — and we would love your feedback. Where do Google or other search engines leave you wanting more when it comes to coding searches? Which sources do you go to when you can’t get what you need from Google and others? What other utilities and use cases would you like to see? How else can we make this better? If you find something that we can improve, apps that you’d want to see, or a search query didn’t give you a good result, please let us know! We’re here to answer any questions! Show HN: A Swiss army knife for testing HTTP from the terminal https://ift.tt/AtB8p9D

Show HN: A Swiss army knife for testing HTTP from the terminal Hiya HN! Just released Artillery Probe - a Swiss army knife for testing HTTP from the CLI. Think mini-curl with better UX for common use-cases, plus a couple of extra features. Would love for you to try it and give some feedback! https://ift.tt/MAoB6V3 and: npm install artillery@latest What does it do? - First of all, it's a HTTP client! It does all the usual stuff you'd expect from a HTTP client... HTTP methods, request bodies, custom headers, forms, Basic Auth etc. - Got some JSON or XML back? It'll pretty-print it, and syntax highlight it for you. - It'll show you request waterfalls like this one: (inspired by httpstat) DNS Lookup | TCP Connection | SSL Handshake | Time to First Byte | Content Transfer 56ms | 14ms | 19ms | 181ms | 88ms | | | | | | 56ms | | | | 70ms | | | 89ms | | 270ms | total:358ms - JSON responses can be queried and sliced and diced with JMESPath (same syntax as AWS CLI) - no need to reach for jq. XML & HTML may be queried with a jQuery-like syntax too. - You can set expectations on the response, e.g. have the CLI check that the response is a 200, or that a certain header is set, and exit with non-zero code if not. Super handy for quick acceptance testing. We've got lots of ideas for improvements, but would love to hear what you think! May 10, 2022 at 11:30PM

Muni Moves You!

Muni Moves You!
By Jeanne Brophy

This week we are launching a campaign to welcome back Muni riders as San Francisco continues to move further into pandemic recovery. The campaign encourages transit trips to destinations throughout the city to reconnect you to the people and places that define our city and shape the communities we belong to.

As many of us adopt new travel patterns for work commutes, school trips with visits to neighborhood businesses, and cultural and sporting activities, Muni offers a reliable, safe option to move about the city.

The launch of the campaign coincides with steadily increasing ridership during the work week and even more increases for weekend ridership. This is good news for SF. Increased ridership will help the city wet its climate goals and reduce traffic congestion. Sustained lower transit ridership can have negative implications for the environment and traffic congestion.

The campaign graphics feature the popular Muni “worm” logo originally designed by Walter Landor in 1975. The abstract logo morphs into iconic images of San Francisco culture. Customers returning to the system will see ads on buses, social media, digital ads, and outdoor media throughout the city. The campaign is a reminder of the importance that public transit plays in fueling the city’s economic and cultural life.

The theme of the campaign is “Muni Moves You”  and is focused on the many reasons to take transit to destinations throughout the city including dining, shopping, nightlife, and museums. Additionally, the campaign educates the public on how the transportation system has evolved during the pandemic with improvements to routes and the expansion of transit lanes throughout the city.  Check out the campaign video to understand some of the changes that have been done.

Look for the #MuniMovesYou, #TakeMuni social tags for the campaign as it rolls out this week encouraging everyone to take Muni as an efficient, reliable, cleaner system than the one experienced before the pandemic. We are always listening so keep the feedback coming.

Taking Muni to Bike San Francisco’s Iconic Rides

Taking Muni to Bike San Francisco’s Iconic Rides
By Kate McCarthy

Image of a Muni bus stopped along Ocean Beach in San Francisco.

Take your bike on Muni using the racks on the front of buses to access bike rides on the Great Highway, through Golden Gate Park and across the Golden Gate Bridge.

Thousands of riders are expected to hop on a bike in May for National Bike Month and Bike to Wherever Day on Friday, May 20. For people new to bicycling in San Francisco, using Muni buses to avoid our famous hills and reduce overall trip distances is a great way to get to iconic bike rides and scenic parks.

All Muni buses have bike racks on their front that can hold two or three bikes (only folding bicycles are allowed on Muni’s Metro trains and historic streetcars). Using the bike racks on Muni buses to transport your bike is easy! And, if you have questions while you are doing it, you can always ask the operator, who can assist you. Those looking to bicycle in parks, along the Great Highway, through Golden Gate Park or across the Golden Gate Bridge can simply hop on Muni buses with their bikes—or take Muni to a bikeshare bike—to experience these iconic rides.

Along the Great Highway

There may be nothing more spectacular than riding a bicycle at the edge of the Pacific Ocean. Each week the Great Highway temporarily becomes a great bike ride Fridays at noon until Mondays at 6 a.m. when the roadway is closed to private automobiles for the two miles between Lincoln Boulevard and Sloat Avenue. Hop on the 5 Fulton, 5R Fulton Rapid, 7 Haight/Noriega, 18 46th Avenue, 38 Geary, 38R Geary Rapid or 48 Quintara/24th Street to access the 17-acre park and its unrivaled scenic public space.

Through Golden Gate Park

Families shouldn’t miss the opportunity to pedal the along the 3.1 mile Promenade through Golden Gate Park that was recently made permanently car-free. Adults and children alike have learned how to ride a bike in Golden Gate Park on JFK between Stanyan Street and Transverse Avenue. From there you can explore all Golden Gate Park has to offer from the Conservatory of Flowers to the Japanese Tea Gardens (recently made free to all San Francisco residents), watch roller skaters at the 6th Avenue Skate Park or roll over to Stow Lake to check out the nesting herons.

One of our favorite Muni facts is that 70% of San Franciscans live within a 15-minute walk of a transfer-free Muni ride on one of our many buses serving Golden Gate Park including 18 46th Avenue, 29 Sunset, 5 Fulton, 5R Fulton Rapid, 7 Haight/Noriega, 28 19th Avenue, 33 Ashbury/18th Street,  43 Masonic and the 44 O’Shaughnessy

Over the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito Ferry

Avoid San Francisco hills on the way to the Golden Gate Bridge by putting your bike on Muni’s 28 19th Avenue and getting off at the Golden Gate Bridge Stop. The Golden Gate Bridge has a bike path on the western side that you can access from the bus stop by bicycling west under the bridge. Once you get across the bridge, take Conzelman Road to Alexander Avenue, go right to pass under Highway 101, and enjoy the downhill ride as you glide into Sausalito. Follow the waterfront onto South, Second and Bridgeway to the ferry terminal at Viña del Mar Park. Golden Gate Ferry will take you and your bicycle on a scenic cruise back to San Francisco.

Once at the San Francisco Ferry Building you can hop on the 9 Fulton, 9R Fulton Rapid, 14 Mission or 14R Mission Rapid to get where you are going next. Or, to get back to the 28 19th Avenue, it is a mostly flat eleven-minute (2.1 mile) bike ride along the Embarcadero north and left onto to Jefferson to Aquatic Park. On the west side of Aquatic Park, you can hop back on the 28 19th Avenue. Depending on whether you decide to pedal the two miles back to the 28 19th Avenue route, this ride is four to six miles, mostly downhill and flat.

New Sculptures Light up Van Ness Avenue

New Sculptures Light up Van Ness Avenue
By Luis “Loui” Apolonio

A light sculpture of colorful round orbs of light on bent and angled colored poles installed at Van Ness and O’Farrell streets

Light sculpture at Van Ness Avenue and O'Farrell Street

Spectators gathered both online and in person to watch new lighting sculptures on Van Ness turned on for the first time on March 31, 2022. The whimsical and brightly colored sculptures located on the new Van Ness BRT boarding platform between Geary and O’Farrell are made of steel with LED lights inside on a timer set to illuminate at night.

The lighting event was kicked off with SFMTA Director Jeff Tumlin and MTAB Chair Gwyneth Borden serving as emcees. Mary Chou, Director of Public Arts and Collections at the San Francisco Arts Commission, spoke about the art installation itself, as well as the process for selecting the artist who would be awarded the project. In addition, Maddy Ruvolo, a member of the SFMTA’s Accessible Services team and a recently appointed member of President Biden’s U.S. Access Board, shared the importance of having accessibility as a part of transportation projects.

However, the true star of the evening was the light sculpture itself—the two installations at the intersections of Geary and O’Farrell streets are parts of a single piece of art. At a prime location among the culture, arts and civic life of Van Ness Avenue, this artwork is meant to inspire conversation.

Contrasts among Pardo’s modern fixtures provide pops of bright color and light against the architecture and more muted tones nearby. The light sculpture at once stands out as being unique and colorful while also complementing the space in which it exists without competing with the surrounding visual elements in the area.

Cuban-American artist Jorge Pardo described the sculpture as “an urban coastal redwood.. it is made of steel, light and weather… it is young not old… it comes out of the concrete…not the soil…it does not grow… its purpose is to orient and remind… maybe of the past... maybe the present... it is an urban machine…”

Pardo, who is based in Los Angeles, is an internationally acclaimed contemporary artist and 2010 MacArthur Fellow known for colorful, architectural, thought-provoking designs. His work is displayed in Miami, Berlin, New York and Paris, and now San Francisco.

The San Francisco Arts Commission selected his proposal which was then shared with the public for comments in 2015. San Francisco’s commitment to public art is codified in the 1969 Arts Enrichment Ordinance, which mandates a percentage of construction costs be earmarked for public art.

Pardo’s creations provide plenty for San Franciscans to discuss. Next time you’re on a bus traveling down Van Ness, visit the new installation and be sure to catch a selfie of yourself with the sculptures.

Show HN: A tool to organize, streamline and share your music discoveries https://ift.tt/clQ3dIw

Show HN: A tool to organize, streamline and share your music discoveries I love music and I'm always trying to discover new music that I can enjoy. In the past years I was using a fairly tedious process of organizing the music albums (or DJ sets, radio shows) in a few lists: - Want to Listen - Listened - Listened (and liked) I wanted to keep track of these lists, what I discovered each month/year and share all this activity and lists with my friends. For that, I was using a combination of tools that weren't made exactly for this job (Discogs+Spotify+IM apps), resulting in a cumbersome experience. So a few months ago I started this hobby project, with the purpose of streamlining my process (make it as easy as possible) and making it fairly simple to share it with fellow music explorers. The basic idea is that you add items to your "Want to Listen" list - these are music albums (or even mixes), that you want to listen. After you listened to them, you can mark them as "Listened" or "Listened and liked". Your activity is then shared with your friends, and you have a public profile where this activity and your lists appear. You can think of it kinda like "Goodreads but for music". There are a few ways to add items to your lists (more to be added in the future): - search by artist name or release title - add using a Discogs release URL - add using a Mixcloud URL - add using a Spotify album URL It's still in super early version, so there are a lot of missing features and for sure a lot of rough edges. I'm open to feedback and suggestions! You can find it at https://digs.fm. A public profile: Stack: Rail, Postgres (also powers the full-text search capability) External APIs used: Discogs, Spotify, Mixcloud Data provided partly by: Musicbrainz (~2.6M releases indexed currently) Hosted on: Render.com (but I'll probably move it to a VPS) May 6, 2022 at 01:14PM

It would also require personal information to be accompanied with the provenance of that data. This way, a user can track down who or what is publishing their data and take action to end their relationship with that company. L Taraval Improvement Project Update

L Taraval Improvement Project Update
By Sevilla Mann

Roundtable at the Community Parklet Shares Project Updates

This past week, the SFMTA hosted a media roundtable discussing updates about the L Taraval Improvement Project at the community parklet located in front of the The Rolling Out Café on Taraval St.

Segment B construction began in February 2022 and is scheduled to be completed Fall 2024. Sewer and water infrastructure work is currently taking place. Future work includes track work, overhead line work, the construction of new boarding islands and streetscape improvements.

On hand to answer questions and provide updates was District Four Supervisor Gordon Mar, SFMTA Board Director Sharon Lai and Director of Transportation Jefferey Tumlin.

The Roundtable

Supervisor Mar opened the discussion by highlighting the many benefits that the local community will receive with the planned infrastructure upgrades along the corridor. These benefits include:

  • Replacing sewer and water lines to allow for longer longevity of utility lines

  • Track upgrades resulting in a smoother ride and less noise for residents and merchants

  • New safety boarding islands for safer boarding and off boarding for Muni customers and for ADA compliance

  • Sidewalk bulbouts and pedestrian crossing at intersections for enhanced visibility and to make pedestrian crossing safer

We value our community partnerships, frequently provide updates and listen to and address community needs and concerns from individual residents and community organizations like the People of Parkside (POPS). As part of the community outreach for project updates, we utilize media in multiple languages, develop multilingual printed materials, use social media, post web updates on project pages and send out email and text updates to subscribers to keep the community informed about potential impacts. Director Tumlin reminded everyone that we depend on our community partners for the success of this project. The partnership is what has led the way during the planning, design and construction of the entire L Taraval Improvement Project.

A construction mitigation program is active for the project to help lessen the impacts to residents and local businesses during construction. The program integrates construction mitigation measures such as dust mitigation, traffic control, and loading, delivery and parking assistance mitigation. The SFMTA in partnership with the Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD) will support small businesses with resources and a suite of services such as free consulting, technical assistance, and the creation of a business action plan. A small business working group has been formed as part of the project and will develop a marketing campaign specific to the businesses in the Taraval neighborhood.

The Community Parklet

Designated as a public space for the neighborhood and Parkside’s first parklet, the community parklet in front of the Rolling Out Café located at 1722 Taraval St. between 27th and 28th avenues was built as a community effort.  Demonstrating tenacity, proprietor Bruno Tse of The Rolling Out Café drove fundraising efforts to solicit and secure the donations and funding needed to complete the parklet. Since its opening in 2016, he has also taken care of the upkeep. Slated for removal this month for the duration of construction, the parklet will be rebuilt once the project is completed. The unique design elements and plaques with contributors’ names have been saved and will be incorporated into the new structure.

The L Taraval Improvement Project

The L Taraval Improvement Project is a multi-agency collaboration with the SF Public Utilities Commission and the Department of Public Works to improve and upgrade the aging infrastructure to make pedestrian crossing safer, increase accessibility and improve transit reliability.

To follow the progress of this project as we move into the next phase, please visit the project webpage and sign up for updates.

Show HN: Nests and Insects, a Roguelike Tabletop Roleplaying Game https://ift.tt/vtf6c3W

Show HN: Nests and Insects, a Roguelike Tabletop Roleplaying Game Hey, everyone! I'm making a game: its title is Nests & Insects and I call it a "Roguelike Tabletop Roleplaying Game (TTRPG)". It is free, as in beer and speech. You can find the rulebook on the game's github repository, linked through the post title. Nests & Insects is a game for 1 to 7 players, one of which takes on the role of the Game Queen (GQ) and describes the game world to the other players. The players control characters who explore and interact with the game world. The players say what their characters do and roll dice to see what happens, then the GQ describes the results. Players' characters are mercenary arthropods raiding a Nest on a Job from a rival Queen. Characters belong to one of six classes: Ants (plural), Beetle, Ladybug, Scorpion, Spider and Wasp, all modelled after real-world species. Nests are the nests of eusocial insects: Ants, Bees or Termites. The Job is to assasinate the Queen, or the King, or steal larvae, or aphids, or fungi, etc. Nests & Insects is "Roguelike" because it borrows elements from Roguelike Computer RPGs (CRPGs): hack-and-slash, dungeon-crawling gameplay, with procedurally generated Nest environments, lethal combat, and a hunger mechanic. The rulebook on the github repo above is all text-based, but formatted with ASCII borders, text boxes and tables, etc. I wrote a bit of code to automate the layouting (if that's a word). You can find the code in the codez/ directory in the repo. You don't need to mess with the code to play the game, but some of you might want to eyeball the raw text with LaTex-like markup under the directory /game/rulebook/raw and then look at the layouting code. Or you might want to tweak the characters' stats under codez/data/, or make your own characters. The code is all in Prolog :) Nests & Insects is still a work in progress. The rulebook is about 60% complete. There's rules for rolling dice (oo lots of dice!), action resolution, combat and stats for all six character classes and a few enemies (just Termites). If you've run a few TTRPGs you can probably bash together a quick game session, although there's plenty of stuff missing (Items, procedural generation, other minigames besides combat etc). I'm posting here because I'm eager for some feedback and because I'm hoping to build a small community around the game. I'm in the liminal space between finishing my thesis and actually getting a PhD so I have some spare time, but I plan to keep working on the game until it's finished, anyway. Also: I'm looking for ANSI or ASCII art for the rulebook. Anyone know anybody who would want to contribute, please get us in touch. Have fun! https://ift.tt/NyH4hAc May 3, 2022 at 11:42AM
